‘Poundland is all about defying inflation and delivering amazing value,’ said Antal-Smith

Poundland has appointed CJ Antal-Smith as its new commercial director, replacing Tim Bettley, who had been in the post since 2021.

Antal-Smith moved to Poundland in October, having spent the previous year as group commercial director for garages at Halfords. She has also previously served as chief commercial officer at Co-op and a category director at Asda.

Bettley had been at Poundland for six years, serving as trading director before moving to the role of commercial director.

Writing on LinkedIn in December, Bettley said he was moving on from the business and planned to take a break before starting his next chapter.

Poundland has recently embarked on a new value-focused retail strategy which takes it back to its £1 price point roots, with swathes of price cuts across its core range. It’s part of a plan by the business to get performance “back on track” after like-for-like sales dipped by 3.6% in the year to 30 September.

The latest cuts on Monday this week saw the number of lines priced at £1 or less in Poundland stores increase from 1,500 to almost 2,400 – nearly half of its total core range of 5,000 products

“Poundland is all about defying inflation and delivering amazing value, and our customers are being very clear that they need us to be at our best in 2025 in the face of continued pressure on household budgets,” said Antal-Smith.

“We know that’s our job, and we’ll do all we can to deliver the promise of amazing value on the items they need.”
