Poundland stores in Northern Ireland are to accept euros as the single-price retailer bids to cash in on the flow of shoppers north from the Republic of Ireland.

The new Strabane store will lead the way when it opens for business next month, with Poundland’s seven other outlets in the province set to accept euros from April.

The move comes with Irish retailers battling to hang on to business as consumers look to make the most of the weak pound by shopping north of the border.

“This is the first time in 20 years that the company has catered for customers who choose to pay in currency other than sterling,” said Poundland boss Jim McCarthy.

“We want to offer our customers on both sides of the border the most convenient payment method.”
