Poundland staff have delivered hundreds of “care packages” of free treats to frontline workers in hospitals, care homes and other essential services.
The contents of the parcels varied from Poundland store to store but included chocolates and sweets.
More than 700 of them were delivered over the VE bank holiday after MD Barry Williams sent a message to stores saying Poundland would be remembered after the crisis for its efforts to support communities.
Poundland matched customer donations to the parcels, which also went to hospital patients, the ambulance service, fire stations and hospices.
Writing on the Poundland staff network on the app Yammer, one store manager said: “Massive shout out to my team and customers for donating to the ambulance service and to the company for matching the donation.
“I had the privilege to deliver over £200 worth of sweets and chocolates to Middlesbrough ambulance station. It’s times like these that make the community stronger.”
The variety discounter was thanked by essential workers on social media.
A worker at Royal Gwent Hospital wrote: “Thank you so much to Poundland customers and staff for your donation of chocolates.
“Due to having no visitors, and the goodies cart not coming around in the hospital, patients’ eyes lit up when they saw what I had.”
A Poundland spokesman said: “We reckon stores sent over 700 packages. The stores are doing a brilliant job. All of this goes pretty much unseen. I’m sure other retailers are doing it too, but it’s brilliant.”
