A new-look Tesco store in Liverpool was flooded with so many job applications interviews were conducted in a temporary location offsite.
The 29,000 sq ft Superstore is the retailer’s first multi-storey premises in a high street location and received more than 1,000 applications for just 200 roles.
Food and drink is located on the ground floor of the new premises, part of the £1bn Liverpool One development, while non-food is situated on the first floor.
“We have had an incredible response from local jobseekers,” store manager Peter Green told the Times. “The recruitment process has been really successful and all managers and team leaders have now been placed.”
The news comes with the big four supermarkets among the few major employers looking to take on additional staff as the recession bites. Rival Asda has already announced plans to take on up to 7,000 new workers in 2009.
