Premier Foods has sold its tea business to Indian tea company Apeejay International Tea Limited, a subsidiary of Apeejay Surrendra, for £80m.
The deal includes Premier Foods’ Typhoo, London Fruit & Herb, Lift and other associated brands. Premier’s own-label contracts and tea blending and packing facility at Moreton, Wirral are also included.
As part of the deal, Premier will provide services to Apeejay, including transitional commercial and administrative support, logistics and the manufacture of Lift and Typhoo QT instant teas.
Premier said that proceeds from the sale would be used to reduce net debt.
Robert Schofield, chief executive of Premier Foods, said: “Typhoo is a great brand but after a thorough review we believe it will benefit from the focus and investment a vertically integrated tea business like Apeejay can bring.”
Last year Premier’s tea business recorded net sales of £70.2m and operating profit of £11.2m.
