Pricing strategies at Tesco seemed to run awry this week. As the mercury hit the 90s, so Tesco's total basket price soared to £47.14, plunging the retailer, which is usually ranked as the UK's second cheapest supermarket behind Asda, down to fourth place on the pricing tables.

Tesco was considerably pricier for a handful of the products on The Grocer 33's shopping list, but most noticeably on its Jacob's Creek Chardonnay 75cl, for which it was charging £5.97 a bottle - £1.97 more than Asda.

It was also 60p more expensive than Asda for the same variant of Lynx shower gel, and 17p more expensive for its own label long grain rice.

As the pricing chart shows, Asda was once again the cheapest supermarket on our list, with the cost of its 33 items ringing in at a cool £44.52.

And after a brief stint in fourth place last week, Morrisons managed to claw its way up the tables, its basket price of £45.56 earning it the position of second cheapest supermarket.

The cost of our goods at Morrisons came to £45.56, which is 64p cheaper than Sainsbury for the same basket of goods.

Sainsbury was sporting slightly more elevated prices than its nearest competitor for five of the items on our list, with the most substantial difference appearing on its own label beef steak mince. At £3.85/kg Morrisons is, in fact, charging the cheapest price of all six retailers for this product.

Waitrose has kept hold of the fifth cheapest shopping basket for the third week in a row. It appears to have been taking a much tighter reign on its pricing strategies of late. At £49.22, the cost of our shopping at Waitrose is just £3.02 more expensive than Sainsbury. Like Morrisons, Waitrose also has a rock bottom price for its own label beef steak mince, and our mystery shopper spotted a vast amount of promotional activity in the Peterborough branch.

Meanwhile, Somerfield remained in six place with its basket price of £52.20.
