Asda is the UK's cheapest retailer for the fourth time in as many weeks, with a £41.18 basket, according to data from The Grocer 33 pricing survey.

It was £2.20 cheaper than Tesco, which came in second-cheapest at £43.38. Morrisons and Sainsbury's continued to jostle for third place, with Morrisons beating its rival this week and providing the third cheapest basket at £44.75.

Sainsbury's ranked fourth-cheapest at £45.27 with Somerfield in fifth place at £51.38. Waitrose was again the most expensive retailer this week with a basket cost of £55.14.

Although there was less promotional activity than in recent weeks, a number of price cuts on items in our basket helped Asda reach the cheapest-retailer position.

This included Philadelphia soft cheese, which was 5p cheaper than at Tesco and an on-going promotion on packs of Kleenex for Men tissues.

Tesco also had a number of significant promotions including a 454g pack of McCain Smiles for 54p - about half the usual price - and Old El Paso fajita dinner kits for £1.86.

There were price increases too as Tesco pushed up the price of a kg of onions by 6p from the previous week, although the price of parsnips has bucked the trend of recent weeks and remains static.

The price of Wall's Viennetta increased by 26% at Tesco and Morrisons, while the cost of 2-packs of white Bounty kitchen towels increased by 53% at Asda.

The price of Ocean Spray cranberry juice shot up by 110% at Somerfield, where the price of 150g packs of Cadbury's milk chocolate fingers also went up by 55%.

The price of large single own-label Melton Mowbray pork pies at Morrisons went up by 89% as well as a 28% hike in the cost of its own-label fresh beef rump steak per kg.

At Sainsbury's, 20% was added to the price of its own-label chopped tomatoes with herbs. But it wasn't just the cost of food that soared - 33% was added to the price of Persil biological tablets at Tesco.
