Morrisons has once again disrupted Asda's plans of achieving a consistent run as cheapest retailer by providing this week's cheapest basket, but it was a close-fought contest with price-slashing Tesco. Morrisons' £40.29 basket contained the cheapest lamb leg joint, at £5 - on offer in the final week of a promotion. One of the only increases in price was on own label shower gel, which was up 26p on last week. This week's second cheapest retailer was Tesco - hot on Morrisons' heels with a £40.44 basket total. It lowered the price of a kilo of pears by 20p, dried spaghetti by 10p and premium pork sausages by 8p. The only item that increased in price was vegetable oil - from 56p to 68p. Asda has been relegated to third position with a £41.01 basket, but it still contained five products that were cheaper than at any other retailer, including Dolmio Bolognese sauce, premium pork sausages and frozen garlic baguettes, though these were 5p more than last week. However, it ramped up the price of its Birds Eye Garden Peas by 38p. Although Sainsbury's matched the prices of 20 of Tesco's products, it's £42.74 basket was hit by price hikes. It added 50p to its lamb leg joint and its Dolmio Bolognese sauce went up by 18p. The price of vegetable oil was 12p higher. However, Sainsbury's provided the cheapest shower gel at 51p. Despite nearly beating Sainsbury's to fourth position last week thanks to a host of price cuts, Somerfield's pricing was back to normal. With a £47.74 basket total, it made no price cuts or increases in this survey but managed to provide the cheapest Pepsi on the list at 71p. The most expensive retailer once again is Waitrose with a £48.29 basket. It provided 14 of the most expensive items on the list, including kitchen foil that was four times more expensive than elsewhere. The price of its own label baked beans have increased from 29p to 35p - more than double the price of Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco versions.
