Morrisons has toppled Asda from its perch to claim the title of UK's cheapest retailer for the first time since 29 September. The only serious challenger for the crown over recent months, Morrisons finally produced the cheapest basket at £43.82 - beating its rival by just 48p. Though it only offered three of the cheapest items on the list, one of those undercut everyone else's prices by a significant margin. Actimel was £1.32 compared with £2.24 at Asda. As well as offering the cheapest long grain rice and bagged potatoes, Morrisons undercut its rival on the ciabatta and avocado by 22p and 16p respectively. It only made two price hikes, adding 12p to the onions and £1.15 to the Hovis wholemeal loaf. While Somerfield and Sainsbury's increased the price of the beef rump steak by £2.51 and £1 respectively, Asda and Morrisons dropped the price of theirs to £7 - the cheapest on the list. Asda offered four of the cheapest items on the list. Its Andrex toilet roll was 38p cheaper than Morrisons' and its fresh garlic 23p less, but the avocado was the priciest in the survey at 84p. Mid-table regulars Tesco and Sainsbury's have swapped places again this week after Tesco made its only price change, reducing the ciabatta by 57p to make it the cheapest on the list. This was enough to elevate it to third place with a £46.96 basket. Even Sainsbury's managed to provide a couple of the cheapest items this week. Its apples were 48p and Kellogg's cornflakes £1 compared with £1.43 at its rivals. Waitrose's prices were cheaper than usual and it offered two items - the eggs and Ocean Spray cranberry juice - for a lower price than any other retailers. Its £52.28 basket contained potatoes, McCain hash browns and Wall's sausages that were cheaper than last week. Aside from reducing the price of Cathedral City Cheddar by 24p, Somerfield made no other price cuts but raised the price of four products. Its £54.40 basket contained 17 of the priciest items.
