Tesco has only just stopped Sainsbury's from becoming our cheapest retailer for the second week in a row. Tesco's £38.74 basket was only 4p less than Sainsbury's but it did itself a huge favour with the beef steak mince that was £1.58 less than last week. The low price helped to offset the fact it had the most expensive Andrex toilet roll and loose onions. Though it was pipped to the post for first place, Sainsbury's £38.78 basket was a full £3 less than Asda's in third place. Sainsbury's offered the cheapest own-label shower gel at 51p. Its Kleenex for Men tissues were only £1.59 - Asda, Morrisons and Tesco were selling the same product for twice the price. Asda drifted even farther from the top spot this week with a £41.78 basket. However, it offered some of the cheapest fruit and its Cadbury Dairy Milk, own-label lemonade and frozen roast potatoes were the most competitively priced in the survey. Asda's cheapest antibacterial handwash was also 43p more expensive, putting any hopes of reaching second place beyond its grasp. Fourth place once again goes to Morrisons. Its £42.16 basket contained products that were largely in line with the trio of cheapest retailers. Morrisons provided the lowest-priced Andrex toilet roll and - at 49p - antibacterial handwash that was half the price of Asda's offering. But its £1.29 new potatoes were significantly pricier. Somerfield must always sense a fifth placing when it sees own-label refuse sacks on the list as Waitrose sells them for more than five times the average price on the list and condemns itself to being the most expensive retailer. Somerfield's £50.08 total does not reflect the range of price cuts it made this week as only the Cadbury Dairy Milk featured on our list. The chocolate was 46p cheaper than last week. Waitrose weighed in with a £55.70 basket. Including the infamous refuse sacks, 11 of its products were the most expensive on the survey.
