It's tight at the top again but Asda has reclaimed the cheapest retailer title after a series of price hikes forced Tesco back to third place. Asda leapt from fourth place to first with a £48.88 basket, despite only cutting the price of one product this week - Lenor fabric conditioner, by 12p, making it the cheapest on the list at £1.26. The only other item it provided cheaper than the other retailers was the Cadbury's Milk Chocolate Fingers, but only for a penny less. Asda also joined Sainsbury's, Somerfield and Tesco in adding 15p to the iceberg lettuce. The fact that it undercut Morrisons on 11 items and Tesco on four also helped it reclaim the title. Morrisons was close behind with a basket that was just 17p more expensive than Asda's. Although it was marginally undercut on 11 products, Morrisons offered three of the cheapest prices by a significant amount. The retailer reduced its Australian red wine by 20p to £2.79, whereas Asda and Tesco priced it at £2.94. Morrisons' beef mince was also 19p cheaper than the rest of the big four and an ongoing promotion priced its Stella Artois at £3.77 - 37p less than Asda and Tesco. But this wasn't enough to claim first place and it added 13p to its Bounty kitchen towels to make them the second-priciest on the list. Only 6p separated Morrisons and Tesco - last week's winner. Raising the price of lettuce by 15p and adding 11p and 10p to the Lenor and croissants respectively resulted in Tesco toppling from the top spot. It made no price cuts this week and none of its items were the cheapest on the list. Aside from a 5p cut to the Bounty kitchen towels, Sainsbury's, with a £49.78 basket, also failed to make any cuts this week and dropped from second place to fourth. It followed Tesco in raising the price of the Lenor and lettuce. Somerfield avoided the most expensive retailer spot by reducing Stella by 20p, Cheddar by 18p, and Anchor by 8p. Waitrose, however, made no price changes at all and its £55.44 basket was 75p more than Somerfield's.
