It's a case of five weeks and not out for Asda, which has chalked up its fifth consecutive week as the cheapest retailer. Asda's £35.32 basket contained five of the cheapest items on the list, although it undercut Morrisons on the loose apples, Hula Hoops and kiwi fruit by just 1p. Asda cut the price of broccoli by 20p this week but added 18p to its celery. It also kept the price of its Wall's Viennetta at £1 for another week making it the cheapest on the survey. Once again, Morrisons could not match Asda's low prices and stayed in second position for another week, despite dropping the price of its tomatoes by 20p. Its £36.55 basket contained the cheapest sausage rolls on the survey at £1.09. Although the price of bread is expected to have gone up by next week, pasta is the only wheat product that has increased in price in The Grocer 33 this week, with Sainbury's, Somerfield and Tesco all raising dried spaghetti by 10p. Tesco provided a £37.34 basket and added 10p to the price of its Anchor Spreadable. However, it lowered its loose broccoli by 20p to match Asda's price of £1.78. Despite being £2.02 more expensive than Asda's basket, Tesco matched its prices on 23 items. Sainsbury's spends another week in fourth place with a £37.83 basket - only 49p more expensive than Tesco. As well as raising the price of its dried spaghetti, Sainsbury's also served up the most dramatic price rise of the week. It's cheapest loose apples were 49p last week, rising a whopping 140% t0 £1.18 this week. Not only has Somerfield won our Top Store award this week, it can also celebrate the fact it has provided two of the cheapest items on the list for the first time. Its Old El Paso fajita kit was reduced by £1.07 to £2 and, at 39p, the price of its celery could not be matched by any other retailer. With Somerfield's price cutting spree, Waitrose has settled back into the position of most expensive retailer. The only cut it made in its £45.48 basket was to its carrots, which were 3p less this week.
