SIR; I read with interest your article about the increase in the price of Heinz baked beans, in which Sainsbury, Tesco and Waitrose had all raised their prices from 34p to 38p while Morrisons and Asda had held their prices at 34p (The Grocer, August 16, p5). All these prices applied to 415g cans. The day before you published your article I bought a case of 24x200g Heinz baked beans from Booker Cash and Carry for £8.59 - just under 36p each.
This proves the frequently stated fact that we independents do subsidise the multiples.
