There was a clear winner in this test, but there was little to differentiate the others.
Waitrose's (five stars) eclairs looked and tasted totally different. The eclair had a handmade appearance and was smothered in rich chocolate and oozing fluffy cream. Better still, at £1.35 it wasn't the most expensive.
Morrisons' (three stars) offering was the best of the rest, with reasonable chocolate and cream, although at £1.40 it was the joint most expensive. Tesco's (£1) and Sainsbury's (£1.40) (two stars) eclairs tasted very similar, with dry pastry and artificial chocolate.
The Asda (one star) option was the cheapest at £1 and it showed. It was cut in two. The pastry was dry and the cream filling was stingy.
