Like custard creams and rich tea, the ginger nut is a British institution - albeit one better upheld by some retailers than others.
Sainsbury's biscuit (four stars) had a crisp bite and a chewy finish, with a warm ginger flavour. Waitrose's attempt (three stars) was a decent enough all-rounder, if a little dry, with subtle but satisfying ginger notes.
Tesco's biscuit (two stars) lacked ginger flavour, but had a nice enough texture. Morrisons' offering (two stars) had a gritty texture and was rather stingy on the ginger front.
Asda's version (one star) was a massive let down. It was a particularly dark shade of brown and tasted a bit overcooked for my liking, which I thought overpowered what ginger flavour there was.
