Malaysian company Revongen has launched an easy to use halal testing kit in the UK that can detect pork in food.

Haltest is a lateral flow immunochromatography test similar to the technology used in pregnancy tests. It is sold by Revongen’s European subsidiary Pop-Bio under the brand 7FoodPillars. Pop-Bio said the product could test for pork residues in 10-20 minutes, with a single-use stick.

The test went on sale this month on Amazon and direct from Pop-Bio (rsp: £9.99).

Four different tests are available: for raw meat, processed meat or canned food, gelatine, and surface swabbing (rsp: £9.99). The brand said it also planned to launch tests using Elisa and Pcr technology later this year.

The test would appeal to individuals as well as food sellers, restaurants and food companies, said Pop-Bio spokesman Paul Ellowood.

It follows a similar test which launched in France in October 2014, made by French start-up Capital Biotech, which detected traces of pork in food, cosmetics and medicines. However, neither product can test how an animal is slaughtered.
