The Association of Convenience Stores has launched a new award in tribute to popular independent retailer Raj Aggarwal, who died from coronavirus in April.
The new Raj Aggarwal Trophy will be awarded to outstanding community retailers from 2021.
ACS CEO James Lowman presented Aggarwal’s widow Sunita Aggarwal with the trophy yesterday in recognition of her husband’s contribution to the sector.
From next year, the award will be presented to retailers who have been exceptional to both their community and fellow retailers at the association’s Heart of the Community conference.
Sunita Aggarwal asked that the award to be given to retailers that embody the characteristics her husband will be remembered for: “An unwavering commitment to the local community and a willingness to help others.”
One of Raj Aggarwal’s final social media posts showed the retailer dropping off supplies for NHS workers at Glenfield Hospital.
“We are delighted to be able to create the Raj Aggarwal Trophy to mark Raj’s enormous contribution to the people around him, the community that he served and the retailers that benefited from his guidance,” said Lowman. “We hope that this trophy will make something positive out of Raj’s legacy for years to come.”
