Rapid grocer Getir is giving customers a free bottle of milk with all orders of £20 or more.
A choice including Cravendale Whole Milk (two-litre), Oatly Oat Drink Barista Edition Long Life (one-litre), Cravendale Semi Skimmed Milk (one-litre) are available in the promotion, which follows reports the price of milk is now exceeding that of petrol at many UK retailers.
“In the wake of this news and spiralling supermarket prices that are shocking shoppers, we are currently giving away free milk nationwide to ensure people are getting the essentials they need, when they need them amid the cost of living crisis,” Getir said.
More than 160 fresh milk and butter lines have seen price rises over the past six weeks, The Grocer analysis of Assosia data shows. At some supermarkets a one-pint bottle of milk is now more than 60% more expensive than it was in January.
At the same time petrol prices are falling, with unleaded E10 having hit a record high of 191p per litre in July, according to RAC analysis, and now at 169p.
Getir’s promotion – which can only be used once by customers – covers all milk products on its app, which are available free for customers covered by the quick commerce service in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Southampton, Sheffield, Portsmouth, Nottingham, Bradford, Leeds, Cambridge and Leicester.
The company said it had “an ongoing commitment to give our customers value up and down the country”.
“In supermarkets, it is cheaper to buy milk in bigger quantities, but it may not be practical for those living alone, the elderly and those who do not use a lot of milk as the product can go off if bought in bulk,” it added.
It is the second major promotion from the rapid grocery business this year. In August, Getir announced it was “rolling back prices to the 1990s”, with discounts of around 45% running through the month.
