Rapid grocery delivery app Gopuff is price matching Aldi on more than 50 popular items, including festive favourites, fresh produce and cupboard essentials.
The price match activity covers both branded goods – including Coca-Cola, Kinder Bueno, Walkers and Stella Artois – and non-branded goods, which are in the most part supplied by Morrisons.
The quick commerce player said the move was an effort to “give UK households an affordable option as they prepare for one of the year’s most expensive seasons”. The price match campaign will run until the end of the year, with a “potential extension depending on customer response”, Gopuff said.
A survey of Gopuff users found 61% were actively seeking ways to save on essentials amid continued inflation and economic uncertainty.
“We know that Christmas can be a financially challenging time, and we’re delighted to provide a real way for our customers to save on their favourite products, while enjoying the added convenience of quick delivery times and 24/7 offerings in most cities,” said Gopuff director of growth Leon Tang.
“Our new price match campaign delivers both affordability and instant delivery, allowing households to shop for essentials and festive treats at the best possible prices – without the stress of planning ahead,” he added. “This initiative answers a clear demand from Gopuff customers.”
It’s not the first bold price-matching campaign from Gopuff, which in August last year began price-beating Tesco superstores on more than 200 essentials. However, the cheaper-than-Tesco promise – available to members of Gopuff’s paid-for subscription offering, FAM – does not take into account prices offered by Tesco’s own loyalty scheme, Clubcard. Gopuff had been price matching Tesco Express stores on around 100 selected products since a year earlier.
Last year, Gopuff also boosted its proposition with a section of its app called ‘Morrisons Corner’, where users can shop Morrisons own-label products as a “better-value alternative to big brands”.
Gopuff’s Aldi price match comes hot on the heels of Sainsbury’s announcement earlier this month that it was expanding its Aldi Price Match to its convenience store network for the first time.
In their larger stores, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons price match against Aldi on a selection of products, with Aldi and Morrisons price matching Lidl as well.
Gopuff has been rolling out 24/7 deliveries across its sites, with the option now available in Cambridge, Salford, London (Bow, Holloway and Stratford), Swansea, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff. It operates until 2am in the other areas it serves.
The 24-hour option “eliminates the need for advance scheduling, which can be especially helpful as seasonal items often sell out quickly”, the company said.
“Customers can order popular Christmas ingredients like mince pies, snacks, and drinks right when they need them, with no need to secure delivery slots in advance,” it added.
