John Bowes, chief general manager for strategy at the Co-operative Group’s retail division, is leaving the business at the end of this month to pursue other interests.
Bowes has been heavily involved in the refit programme for the Co-operative Group’s Alldays stores as well as its integration of Conveco.
During his career he held senior management posts in buying, operations, strategic planning and marketing.
And he was a key player in the formation of the CRTG, the movement’s buying group.
The Co-operative Group said it would not make a decision on
whether to replace Bowes until a replacement for Malcolm Hepworth, head of its retail division, had been appointed.
For now the three managers who were under Bowes will share his responsibilities, supervised by Neil Braithwaite, director of finance and IT for the group. The society announced that Hepworth would be leaving to pursue other interests last month.
Chief executive Martin Beaumont said: “John has played an integral role in the development of our food retail strategy. He was the driving force behind our campaigning stance on ethical issues, including our position as the leading retailer of fair trade.”
Bowes said: “I have enjoyed my career with the group immensely, but now it feels right to consider new challenges, as well as making more time for my interests outside retailing."
