Cornish clotted cream brand Rodda’s has achieved B Corp accreditation.
The 130-year-old producer was certified with a score of 93 (against a UK average of 88) in the year-long process, which covers the entirety of a business’s operations and ensures high social and environmental standards.
The creamery supports the local community by using milk selected from farms within a 30-mile radius, with each required to pass their bespoke farm assurance for higher animal welfare. In return, Rodda’s offered support, advice and a fair price for their milk, it said.
And over the past five years it had contributed more than £100 million to Cornwall’s economy, with the business continuing to work with over 40 Cornish farming families, it added.
Other initiatives include donating up to 50,000 portions of Cornish clotted cream and jam on National Cream Tea Day every year to raise money for worthy causes, while in 2021, its senior management team volunteered more than 100 hours to help support gardening and DIY projects in the local community.
Employees also spent two days clearing an overgrown garden for an 87-year-old who had been affected by cancer.
Recently the brand gave away more than 38 traditional milk churns, which will be painted by local artists and form part of a trail across Cornwall in 2022, before being auctioned to raise money for the Cornwall Hospice Care.
It has also created a dedicated outdoor space called The Sensory Garden that is planted with pollinating wildflowers and give staff the opportunity to take mindful breaks.
MD Nicholas Rodda said the certification reflected his “exceptional team” who “were the most important part of our business.”
“We are always challenging ourselves to do better, and this accreditation, which rubberstamps the work we’ve always done, marks a defining moment in the company’s development,” he said.
“The journey to becoming B-Corp accredited has been a fun, yet challenging process, covering all areas of our business from our farmers, suppliers, community, environment and our people.”
