Pesto and pasta sauce specialist Sacla’ is making a major NPD push, with a range of new products rolling out over the next few months.
The company is hoping to take advantage of recent growth in the meal kit and cooking paste category - the only Italian segment in growth. The category, which includes pesto and pizza toppings, is up 3.5% to £54.5m and Sacla’ is outperforming the wider market with 6.7% growth to £22.4m [IRI 52 w/e 2 January].
“We have a vision that it could be as big as Oriental and Indian in a few years’ time,” said UK MD Clare Blampied.
A new Sun-blush Tomato Pesto, the 12th in Sacla’s pesto range, will hit 250 Waitrose stores this month (rsp: £2.29/ 190g). “Pesto in jars is really important for us, building on the pioneering spirit of the brand,” Blampied said.
Sacla’ is also tapping into the stock pot trend with the launch of Bolognese Boost - four 45g pots (rsp: £2.29) of 26 concentrated ingredients to ‘transform your bolognese’ - in Waitrose this month. Blampied said the new product would “drive growth in the struggling pasta bolognese sauce category”.
Pesto Shots, launched six months ago, are being rebranded Pesto Pots, with a new Tomato Pesto in selected Waitroses in March. The packs of four 45g pots (rsp: £2.99), have an almost 20% price premium compared with jars. Sacla’ was changing the name because it didn’t want consumers to think they were concentrated versions of pesto, Blampied said. A Free-From Pesto Pot will roll out in 50 Waitrose stores this June.
Sacla’ has also launched a Free-From Risotto sauce in wild mushroom flavour (rsp: £2.49/190g), and a Free From Besciamella sauce (rsp: £2.29/350g). Other new lines include 150g stir-in sauces - Creamy Tomato and Tomato & Basil (rsp: £1.89).
