Apples featured strongly in promotions at Sainsbury this week with Class I French Golden Delicious on 50% free (12 apples for the price of eight ­ £1.49). French Class I Braeburn were on an identical offer. Cheek by jowl with French crop, in a polybag featuring a Union Flag, Class I Suffolk Cox were on 25% extra free (1.25kg for the price of !kg ­ £1.59). Sainsbury was also selling Spanish Navel Late large oranges this week at 50% free (24.8p per fruit including two fruits free). The variety is becoming increasingly popular as a dessert orange with all multiples because of its high sugar and juice content. On gondola end was a bogof pack of Class I Souvenir plums from South Africa, selling at £2.99 for 750g. The variety is regarded as one of the last of the early plum range prior to the switch to bulk main lines such as Sungold. It has a three week season with picking in late December and was bred by the South African Agricultural Research Council, appearing commercially in 1993, and is one of a new range of varieties which mature more evenly. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
