Sainsbury's first on site wind turbine will be installed at its distribution depot in Scotland.
The wind turbine will supply between 25% and 40% of the energy required at the 26,000 sq m depot.
"It makes good business sense to try this technology and at the same time it will complement Sainsbury's commitment to environmental issues," said a spokesman. If the trial is successful Sainsbury's expects to extend the project to other sites. "Renewable energy will play a growing part in Sainsbury's energy programme in the future," said Sainsbury's property and environmental affairs director Ian Coull.
