Sainsbury's is the first retailer to sign up to the Department of Health's proposed guidelines on the labelling of own-label
alcohol products.
The voluntary guidelines, which aim to encourage sensible drinking, were created after research revealed consumers found it hard to judge how many units they were drinking.
Sainsbury's own-label spirits will display information on the recommended daily intake and the number of units per glass and bottle. The back labels will also include information on drinking while pregnant.
"This new labelling system is the best way to increase awareness of the recommended daily levels," said Warren Anderson, category manager for beers, wines and spirits.
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference spirits range already displays the labels, which will be extended to Sainsbury's vodka, rums and Basics spirits range later this month, followed by the retailer's own-label beers and wines.
