Sainsbury’s has brought back the infamous Prosecco offer that enables consumers to bag a bottle for just £2.63.
The supermarket reduced its Valdo Prosecco Marco Oro bottles from £9 to a price of £7.50 this week. This price can be lowered to less than £3 when combined with a voucher code and offer of 25% off on six or more bottles.
The Money Saving Expert website pointed out the potential savings when Sainsbury’s first launched a similar price reduction on its Taste the Difference prosecco in May, prompting a flurry of media activity.
But the supermarket withdrew the offer before its specified end date due to lack of availability.
Despite stressing that the withdrawal was nothing to do with the combination of offers, Sainsbury’s faced a backlash from customers, some of whom went as far as writing to its CEO Mike Coupe.
Sainsbury’s said the decision to run the promotion again until 27 August was not linked to the negative publicity. “We run wine offers quite regularly. They aren’t a new thing,” said a spokeswoman.
