Sainsbury’s has joined The Co-operative Group in boycotting the News of the World following this week’s phone hacking allegations.
“Due to the rising concerns of our customers, we are suspending any advertising in the News of the World until the outcome of the investigation,” Sainsbury’s announced today via its Facebook page.
The move comes after Co-op members demanded the mutual halt any advertising with the crisis-hit News International title.
“The Co-operative Group has taken the decision to suspend temporarily any further advertising and promotional activity with the News of the World until the outcome of the investigation is known,” the society said.
“The group is a consumer-owned business that adheres to strong ethical standards. These allegations have been met with revulsion by the vast majority of members who have contacted us.
“We would urge everyone involved to bring this matter to a speedy conclusion for the sake of all those who are affected by these events.”
Yesterday Morrisons said it would “continue to monitor the situation over the next week before making any decisions on our advertising". The supermarket is understood to have not been planning any advertising in this Sunday’s upcoming edition.
Meanwhile, the backlash against the newspaper continued after independent retailer Andrew Thornton said he would not be selling it in his two Budgens stores.
“Given what is going on, we have decided not to stock this paper until further notice and are encouraging other retailers to do same,” he told The Grocer.
