Sainsbury’s has launched a pop-up drive-through hot food restaurant as a way of showcasing its new healthy eating range.
The “Flourish Fuel Station” will open overnight on 25, 26 and 27 January, and will serve a limited selection of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks from the supermarket’s nutritional range Flourish, first launched this month.
The site at a Sainsbury’s forecourt in London Colney, St Albans, is being targeted specifically at helping overnight workers – such as taxi drivers and security guards – get better access to healthy food, Sainsbury’s said.
Its launch comes alongside research commissioned by the supermarket that suggests that nightshift workers struggle to access healthy meals, with as many as 16% saying they don’t eat any fruit & vegetables during some work weeks.
“We hope that Sainsbury’s new Flourish range will help to address that, with the Fuelling Station offering the chance to try nutritious options for free,” said Sainsbury’s director of product and innovation Claire Hughes.
Sainsbury’s said it may explore providing further solutions to offer hot food options during unsociable hours in the future if it is successful.
The supermarket first launched the 65 SKU-strong Flourish in January. The items retail at between £1 and £4.
“Flourish has been developed as a positive approach to health, created alongside chefs and nutritionists. The range is all about delicious food with healthy ingredients that support a balanced diet,” Hughes added.
The dishes served at the Flourish fuelling station include a jerk chicken with coconut rice, Mexican style beef chilli and a vegan bhaji and rainbow slaw salad. Infusion teas, gut health yogurts and smoothies will also be available.
