Sainsbury’s Nectar users can now donate their points to the Woodland Trust as part of a climate change-fighting initiative.
The loyalty programme’s customers are now able to spend their points to help protect and restore the UK’s ecosystems as part of a partnership with the country’s largest woodland conservation charity.
For every 2,000 points donated via the Nectar app and website, the Woodland Trust will plant a tree on behalf of the shopper.
Every 5,000 points’ donation goes towards the maintenance and protecting of the existing biodiversity cared for by the organisation – hence contributing to lower atmospheric CO2 levels.
In addition, Nectar customers who sign up to become a member of the Woodland Trust can also receive extra points to their account from every £1 spent on their membership fees, as well as additional points per £1 spent on Woodland Trust-marked products such as Sainsbury’s SO Organic eggs.
“We’re proud to be supporting the Woodland Trust, in all of the important work it’s doing by creating and maintaining habitats for wildlife and providing spaces for people to enjoy nature,” said Sainsbury’s head of corporate responsibility and sustainability Ruth Cranston.
“With COP26 underway, we know that our customers and colleagues are looking for more ways that they can help support nature and biodiversity, so we’re delighted to offer them the chance to donate their Nectar points to plant trees and help protect and restore our woodlands.”
Sainsbury’s is this year’s COP26 principal supermarket partner. The retailer recently announced its commitment to become net zero in its own operations by 2035 and to reduce Scope 3 emissions across the entire value chain by 30% by 2030.
The Woodland Trust’s director of fundraising, Karl Mitchell, said the trees planted through the Nectar partnership will help boost the charity’s bid to plant 50 million trees by 2025.
“The Woodland Trust has a long and fruitful relationship with Sainsbury’s that spans more than a decade and has seen over 4.3 million native trees planted.
“This new Nectar partnership is set to branch this relationship out even further, bringing more huge environmental benefits.”
