Sainsbury’s is predicting its biggest digital Christmas to date.
The retailer said it expected around three million customers to have shopped with either Sainsbury’s or Argos on smartphones, tablets and in-store handsets over the past three days.
Sainsbury’s delivered 175,000 food orders to customers’ homes using 2,500 vans, and said 370,000 will have used the SmartShop app in store this weekend.
It said 60,000 shoppers had placed orders on its upgraded Food to Order website to pick up in store between Sunday and tomorrow – Christmas Eve. It said this represented a 10% increase on last year’s peak Christmas trading days.
Sainsbury’s is also predicting that between 11am and midday tomorrow will be the busiest hour for last-minute orders on its Argos Fast Track delivery service. Customers can place orders until 1pm on Christmas Eve.
“Digital is massive for us at Sainsbury’s and it’s a trend that’s set to continue,” said Sainsbury’s head of digital product Michele Swaine.
“With SmartShop available in significantly more Sainsbury’s stores this year, we can save customers precious time by getting them through the checkout quicker. Combined with market-leading delivery at Argos, this year we’re set up to help even the most last-minute of shoppers find what they need.”
