Sainsbury's has scaled down a development in Croydon in a bid to get permission for a new store in the same area Tesco is hoping to build what could be the UK's biggest supermarket.
New plans for the Sainsbury's on Brighton Road, Coulsdon, have been submitted after planners said the mixed-use development in the previous proposal was too big.
Sainsbury's says it now wants to build 26 flats above the store - 13 fewer than in the previous application - over five storeys, one fewer than before.
Meanwhile, Tesco continues its charm offensive in the run-up to lodging an application for an extension to its nearby Purley store. Early indications were that Tesco hoped to extend the store from 82,000 to 139,000 sq ft.
A public meeting to discuss the proposal will be held next week.
