Sainsbury’s is scrapping plastic cards for new Nectar loyalty scheme members, meaning they can no longer sign-up in store.
Instead they must go online or download an updated app, which includes a new “digital card” to scan in stores instead of a plastic one. Existing customers can continue to use their plastic cards in stores.
The app and website have also become more personalised, including weekly special offers and bonus Nectar points on products bought regularly at Sainsbury’s, on top of the single point earned for every £1 spent.
Points are earned for shopping at around 400 retailers including Sainsbury’s and can be used in store or online for purchases including food, drink and travel.
Customers already using the app, available for Android and Apple devices, will have to download and install an update.
The move follows a trial of the new app in Wales and the Isle of Wight.
“We’re delighted to be unveiling a new world of Nectar to our customers, making it easier than ever before for them to get the most out of our hundreds of partners and rewards on offer,” said Nectar MD James Moir.
“During the trials in Wales and the Isle of Wight, we listened to what our customers wanted and how they like to receive offers, in an increasingly digitised world. This led us to a change in direction for the Nectar scheme, enabling our customers to have a much more personalised experience with offers that are unique to them.”
