Sainsbury’s is continuing its work to tackle single-use plastic by enabling shoppers to fill up their own reusable water bottles.
The retailer is installing fresh water stands in 326 supermarket cafés, which will be available for customers from August.
It is also following similar moves by Morrisons and Waitrose to encourage customers to bring their own reusable containers to its fresh and deli counters to pick up meat, fish, cheese and deli items. It is rolling out PoS to let customers know they can avail of this service.

“Our customers want to use less plastic so I am determined that Sainsbury’s continues to find ways to help them do that,” said Sainsbury’s chief executive Mike Coupe.
“Allowing customers to refill their own water bottles and re-use food containers is further evidence of our commitment to reduce unnecessary plastic waste.”
Sainsbury’s already offers 25p off hot drinks across all cafés when a customer brings a reusable cup.
In the past few weeks Sainsbury’s has made a number of major pledges around either removing plastic or replacing hard-to-recycle packaging. These include removing plastic bags for loose fruit & vegetables as well as bakery lines and removing plastic trays for asparagus, sweetcorn, tomatoes and carrots, plastic lids from cream pots and the plastic sleeves from herb pots, as well as removing plastic cutlery from its stores.
