Tesco has teamed up with Samworth Brothers to launch a new exclusive-to-Tesco range of premium sausages under the name Chef and Farmer.

Three Chef and Farmer variants - pork pork chipolatas and Bramley apple & sage - went into Tesco last week, priced at an introductory £2 per pack. Their standard price will be £2.99.

The sausages are made with Freedom Food pork and have a meat content of 80% to 90%. Made with polenta rather than wheat rusk, they are also gluten-free.

Chef and Farmer was developed for Tesco by Samworth Brothers’ Walkers Midshire Foods division, which produces own-label sausages for Tesco’s Finest range.

Walkers MD Steve Crawford said the company had identified a gap in the market for a high-quality, higher-welfare sausage that was also free from gluten. “We developed the Chef and Farmer brand specifically to highlight these credentials,” he said.

“We wanted a brand that wasn’t celebrity-driven, like so many other brands are, but one that focuses on what consumers want.”

The Chef and Farmer brand is owned by Samworth Brothers but will only be sold in Tesco.
