Welsh dairy co-op South Caernarfon Creameries has won a major contract to supply Sainsbury’s with its own-label Basics cheese range.
The processor, owned by 130 farmer members across North and Mid Wales, will make 13 products at its new £8.5m cheese production facility in Gwynedd for the retailer, alongside an existing deal to supply premium-tier cheese.
It is understood SCC won the contract at the expense of Arla. The new Basics range will roll out later this year.
“With our new cheese production facility soon to be fully operational, this contract will result in the new facility being at full production from the outset,” said SCC MD Alan Jones, who added the contract would lead to a “significant investment” in the co-op’s cheese packaging operations which would create around 15 new jobs.
“Securing an important contract such as this will give all of our stakeholders great confidence for the future of our business,” he said.
“Having worked with South Caernarfon Creameries on recent projects, we have been continually impressed by the quality of their products and consistency of supply,” said Sainsbury’s cheese buyer James Connaughton.
“The flexibility and capability in production and the knowledge and professionalism of their team will enable us to adapt and create new products in the future and we are pleased to be working with a business in which provenance is integral.”
