Swizzels Matlow has signed a licensing deal with Warner Bros Consumer Products [WBCP] to create Scooby-Doo treats the 80-year-old confectionery company's first product as well as packaging-based licensing deal.
The first Scooby-Doo treats from the Love Hearts and Drumstick lollies supplier will be fizzy tablets with embossed Scooby-Doo imagery and gums shaped like the characters in the hit cartoon.
Set to hit shelves early next year, the new line-up will also include Scooby-Doo versions of Love Hearts and Drumstick lollies, as well as a host of "brand new goodies", details of which are still under wraps.
All the new products will be priced between 25p and £1. "The range is set to hit the sweet spot of parents who fondly remember the cowardly canine and Swizzels tuck shop treats from their own childhoods," said Mark Walker, Swizzels Matlow sales director.
"We expect it to be a strong contributor to UK sales, which are up 8% year-on-year, as it will also appeal to the whole new generation of fans who can't get enough of the vast array of new Scooby-Doo consumer products."
The Derbyshire supplier, which claims to be the UK's biggest independent confectionery company, signed a packaging licensing tie-in 15 years ago when it featured Star Trek images on sweet wrappers but the sweets themselves remained unchanged. The Scooby-Doo tie-up was a "perfect fit" and a great opportunity to go one step further, said Walker.
"We are very excited to develop a fun range of sweet treats that leverages the iconic status of our respective brands," he said.
"Just like the Scooby-Doo brand, Swizzels Matlow has a very proud and respected tradition of producing quality products that can be enjoyed by the whole family."
Swizzels expected the sweets to benefit from renewed interest in the cartoon characters on the back of a new Scooby-Doo television series showing on Cartoon Network now.
On-pack and social media activity were also planned.
