Scotland’s pigmeat producers will pull out of BPEX, it has been confirmed.
This means all levies paid by Scotland’s pig farmers will now go to Quality Meat Scotland. The decision followed a consultation exercise in which Scotland’s producers voted to pull out [The Grocer, April 23].
The Grocer understands that BPEX is not currently planning to change its name. However, given sensitivities about origin among the farming community, it is possible that the pressure to do so from England’s pig producers will be great.
The BPEX board said it reluctantly accepted the decision. Chairman Stewart Houston added: “We worked very hard to persuade them to remain part of the larger body.”
It is believed the split will happen fairly swiftly. Robin Traquair, who represents Scotland, will be leaving the BPEX board.
