Sainsbury is trialling a new red variety of the Green Comice pear, called Sweet Sensation, in 80 stores.
The new red pear has taken Sainsbury’s Dutch pear supplier, Van Doorn, almost four years to cultivate and grow. As the name suggests, it is sweeter than its green counterpart and is the only red pear to combine a sweet aromatic flavour and juicy texture.
The initial crop from Holland has produced 500 cases, all of destined for Sainsbury. Over the
next two years, it is intended that a further 50,000 trees will come on stream. Gemma Clark, Sainsbury’s pear buyer, said: “This is the first new pear on the market for some years.
“The red variety has many of the qualities of the Green Comice pear with the added appeal of a much sweeter taste and an eye-catching colour. Bearing in mind the popularity of the green variety, we’re very confident Sweet Sensation’ will appeal to our customers.”
Rsp: £1.99/kg.
