Gordon Ramsay’s Seriously Good sauce brand - launched to support Comic Relief - has been axed.
Rolled out to retailers in 2009, listings for the range of Italian and Indian cooking sauces have fallen off this year - and Comic Relief said “the time was right” to bring to an end the Seriously Good initiative.
Asda and Sainsbury’s no longer carry the brand, although Tesco will continue to do so until supplies of the sauces - produced by Greencore - run out.
Ramsay developed the idea for the range after visiting Tanzania with Lenny Henry for Comic Relief, and launched Seriously Good as a way of raising money for the charity 365 days a year.
Comic Relief, which received 10p from the sale of each jar, said the initiative had raised £470,000 that would be used to “help some of the poorest people both here at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries”.
Ramsay this week told The Grocer it had been a pleasure to work with Comic Relief on the Seriously Good range.
“However, we have decided to bring the initiative to a close,” he said. “We would like to thank everyone who supported the project, particularly those who bought a Seriously Good jar and helped raise funds for this important cause.”
Earlier this year, Seriously Good made tabloid headlines after it was reported that brand owner - and Comic Relief subsidiary - Brand Relief Ltd had lost almost £1m.
This week, a spokesman for Comic Relief said there were no plans to wind up Brand Relief.
