Described as a ’delicious alternative to pork bacon’, it is also lower in fat and higher in protein than traditional bacon

Scottish butcher brand Simon Howie has expanded its range in Tesco stores north of the border with a beef streaky bacon.

Described as a “delicious alternative to pork bacon”, it is also lower in fat and higher in protein than the traditional Meat.

The brand has two lines: Premium Dry Cure Smoked Streaky Beef Bacon (rsp: £3.50/180g) and Premium Dry Cure Unsmoked Streaky Beef Bacon (rsp: £3.50/180g). They are a “versatile and easy-to-use ingredient which is a great addition to pastas, salads and stir-fries, while also tasting great in sandwiches and baguettes”, Simon Howie said.

The new lines follow the successful launch of Simon Howie Premium Unsmoked Beef Bacon Medallions in April.

It comes as the business has also extended listings for the Reduced Fat Gluten Free Black Pudding it launched in Asda in April to Tesco stores across Scotland.

The product (rsp: £1.50/240g) contains 30% less fat than its standard black pudding.

The reformulated product was a result of consumer demand, with the butcher receiving multiple requests from the gluten free community asking for a black pudding to suit.

Product development was made possible thanks to a grant from the Food and Drink Federation’s Reformul8 Challenge Fund, which supports businesses in Scotland to make products healthier.
