In an attempt to tailor its cheeses to Japanese tastes, Grandma Singletons is developing a cheese blended with samphire.
The dairy has supplied non-blended cheeses such as standard Cheddar to Japan for a number of years and recently started exporting blended cheeses, such as cheese with cranberries and Grandma Singletons Apple Pie Cheese.
Looking to create blends inspired by local ingredients, Grandma Singletons is developing a Lancashire with samphire – a salty coastal plant like asparagus – with a view to sending samples to Japanese customers in the next few weeks. “What they’re looking for now is something a little different,” said sales manager Richard Green.
If it gets a favourable response, the dairy hopes to get the product in stores such as high-end Japanese retailers by April 2012.
