An all-party parliamentary Small Shops Group has been formed to press home the concerns of the sector to MPs.

Current issues include the impact of a Safeway takeover, the level of retail crime and violence and the mounting burden of red tape.

The group, which will meet quarterly, includes representatives from the Association of Convenience Stores and the Rural Shops Alliance, as well as MPs.
Group chairman is Jim Dowd, Labour MP for Lewisham West and a former petrol forecourt operator.

A spokesman for the Association of Convenience Stores said: "We have been very involved in setting this up. The group will be a really good way of getting MPs to grasp details of an issue and how the sector works."
