A new potato product has been launched that will make it easier to get kids to eat their 5-a-day, its makers promise.
Mighty Mash contains fresh vegetables and fruit, with each serving providing up to two of a child's 5-a-day. Five flavours have been confirmed - apple & sweetcorn, leek & sweetcorn, broccoli & carrot, carrot & garden peas, and leek, rsp £1.09 for 200g and £1.89 for 400g.
Northern Irish producer From Our Farm said it was in discussions with retailers over listings and that Mighty Mash could be eaten alone or as an accompaniment to sausages, mince, baked beans or other popular kids' foods. The products were developed in response to research showing many children aged five to 10 disliked cooked veg, but liked mash.
Packaging and advertising for Mighty Mash would feature colourful characters Masher and the Goodies , it said. The characters will also appear in promotional story books and 'googly eyes' giveaways .
All the ingredients were picked, mixed and mashed on the company's farm, said MD John McCann, adding that celebrity chef Jenny Bristow had been recruited to help develop the low-salt, low-fat product.
"Nutrition and diet are constantly on our minds due to the media spotlight on obesity and its origins in childhood diets and early eating patterns," said McCann. "From Our Farm addresses these issues."
From Our Farm, formerly Willowbrook Foods, has a turnover of £12m and supplies salad and vegetables to retailers including The Co-operative Group, Spar, Costco, Costcutter and Musgrave Ireland.
