Currently fruit is making between £9-£10/10kg carton on wholesale markets with total UK shipments reaching 300,000 cartons.
"Fruit is looking exceptional," agrees Paul Edwards, sales director of UK importer Eurofruit, based near Canterbury. He said Eurofruit is planning to ship 2.6 million cartons of all citrus varieties to Europe this year.
Satsumas will be followed by clementines in mid-May, although trade sources do not expect a flood of fruit as seen last year because the Spanish season finished early.
