North Wales-based farmer co-operative South Caernarfon Creameries has launched a premium cave-aged Cheddar for Sainsbury ’s in partnership with Welsh tourist attraction Llechwedd Slate Caverns.
The Welsh Slate Aged Cavern Cheddar went on sale on Sainsbury’s deli counters on 23 April (rsp: £11.90/kg), with a 200g retail pack under the Taste the Difference range to follow in early autumn.
The Cheddar is matured for 14 months in the caverns of Blaenau Ffestiniog using a traditional French technique.
South Caernarfon Creameries MD Alan Wyn-Jones said the process added unique characteristics to the cheese , including a firmer body.
