Hampshire convenience store operator Amir Sattari and his family have converted a third former pub in Portsmouth to a Spar convenience store.
Sattari, who now runs four Spar stores in Portsmouth, acquired the empty Tangier public house two years ago. He has redeveloped the site to include a 1,725 sq ft store on the ground floor with private accommodation above, while keeping the pub façade.
The store offers customers a wide selection of fresh and chilled products including fruit and veg, frozen foods, a full range of grocery products and food to go. An additional 300 sq ft has been set aside for a Costa Coffee concession, with seating for customers inside and outside. “The store looks very nice and customers in the area are very pleased with what we have done,” said Sattari,
Four years ago, he converted the former New Roebuck pub in Buckland into a Spar, and in 2013 acquired the former Devonshire Arms in Southsea and turned that into a c-store. The family own a fourth non-pub Spar in Southsea.
Sattari and his wife Jane opened their first Spar in Hampshire 29 years ago. Now the couple are handing over the day-to-day running of the family business to their sons, Karim and Reece.
Spar wholesaler Appleby Westward co-invested in the development of the Tangier with the Sattari family. This was part of the £2m it plans to pump into store development schemes with Spar retailers in the South West in 2016.
