Spar UK has appointed former Nisa boss Michael Fletcher as its new MD.
It comes over a year since the symbol group began searching for a new leader after Louise Hoste exited the business in September 2023.
Fletcher, who brings experience from a wealth of high-profile roles within the convenience and grocery retail sectors, will start his new role on 22 November.
During his nine-month stint at Nisa, Fletcher had promised to radically overhaul the buying group’s operating and cost structure in a bid to become more competitive for retailers.
Since his exit, he has taken on several non-executive director and board advisory roles. He is also the founder and CEO of Sleet Brush, where he focuses on designing and implementing innovative solutions to complex retail and wholesale challenges.
Prior to joining Nisa, Fletcher spent 22 years at Tesco, where he held numerous senior commercial roles in the UK, Ireland and Asia, before he was hired by Co-op as its chief commercial officer in 2013.
“Michael has outstanding credentials in commercial, retail and fmcg sectors, with experience across various trading environments,” said Nick Bunker, non-executive chair for Spar Food Distributors.
“His professional capabilities and high standards consistently drive excellent business performance and operational resilience. We are delighted with his appointment and look forward his lasting and positive contribution to the Spar business.”
Fletcher added: “Spar is a globally recognised and respected brand, and I am thrilled to join the team. I look forward to supporting the ongoing strengthening and development of the Spar proposition in the UK.”
