Spar UK has revealed its new Market store format with its first flagship shop in Wales.
The store in Pwllheli relaunched with the new fascia on 30 September after a complete refit.
New additions include freshly made bread and pizzas, a cereal dispenser, orange juicing machines, self-serve hot and cold food to go, ready meals and smoothies prepared in-house. The refitted store also features a lobster tank and a meat-ageing cabinet.
Coloured LED shelves showcase premium spirits, and there is a lockable cabinet to display premium wines.
The format change has driven sales up by almost 10% and grown its margins by 2%.
Spar UK’s Market format was developed for stores larger than 3,000 sq ft, targeting shoppers with higher basket spends than the average consumer. This fascia offers a wider range of products and more fresh foods.
Blakemore Trade Partners co-invested in the store’s development and collaborated with Blakemore Design & Shopfitting to facilitate the refit.
“Conrad’s Pwllheli store was an ideal candidate for the first Spar Market format, said Spar UK Blakemore Trade Partners head of formats John Murray.
“Before the refit, the shop already performed like a supermarket and thrived in the face of intense competition, achieving fame for its great fresh food offering and unswerving support for local Welsh food producers.
“We have been working with Spar UK and our independent retailers to create a range of mission-focused store formats that have the flexibility to meet the individual needs of retailers and the local demands of their customers.”
