Spirits - but not prices - continue to soar down the promotional aisles despite an increase of 55p duty per bottle in the Budget.
Of the top five spirits brands recorded by Assosia in its survey of promotional activity at the weekend, only one has increased its offer price post Budget.
Smirnoff led the spirits top five promotional activity chart with 29% of space and offers in Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.
Smirnoff 1-litre Red Label still had a basic pre-promotional price of £14.98 and an offer price of £12.98 at Asda and Sainsbury's. Morrisons, meanwhile, offered a special purchase price of just £12.
Gordon's Gin 1-litre took second place with 24% of space. Asda's base price remained at £14.98 and its promotional price at £13, while Sainsbury's base and promotional prices stayed at £15.49 and £12.99 respectively.
Baileys Irish Cream promotions in Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Asda last weekend secured the brand third place with 19% of offers.
Again taking average figures both pre and post-Budget, Asda's prices have remained static at £14.98 and £13 and Sainsbury's at £15.98 and £12.98. Morrisons again offered a special purchase price, this time of £10.
Fourth-placed brand Malibu, with 15% of activity, has only been captured on featured space promotion in Sainsbury's in 2008.
The brand has shown consistent activity with offers on its 70cl and 1-litre bottles. Savings have remained constant, as has the base price, with its 1-litre product reduced from £16.49 to £13.49 on promotion and a 70cl bottle from £11.99 to £9.99.
With a similar promotional pattern to Malibu, Grants took fifth place with 13% of activity and has been on offer in Sainsbury's throughout 2008 with its Grant's whisky 1-litre.
The pre-promotional price has not changed from £16.29. However, the offer price has risen since the Budget to £14.29, reflecting a fall in the saving from £3 pre-Budget to £2 post.
