from Stuart Palmer, marketing director, Traidcraft
Sir; Thanks for highlighting the fact that the UK is now the world’s largest fair trade market (‘Tradecraft in Tesco attack’, The Grocer, February 19, p6). Traidcraft welcomes the growing involvement of supermarkets, such as Tesco, which have played an important part in this.
My comments were not seeking to attack Tesco’s involvement in fair trade, but to point out the continued difference between commercial licensees like the supermarkets and dedicated fair trade organisations like Traidcraft.
We want to encourage supermarkets to adopt the full fair trade model and build awareness of the need for fairer trade systems across the board.
Stocking fair trade products is a step forward, but it is only a start.
